When Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone spent £250,000 hiring pop star Rihanna to sing at his daughter Petra’s engagement party, everyone wondered how he could possibly beat that on the big day itself.
Now doting Bernie has taken his spending to a new realm – paying £1 million for the Black Eyed Peas to perform at Petra’s wedding next month.
The chart-topping U.S. group, fronted by singers Will.i.am and Stacy ‘Fergie’ Ferguson, will be flown out to perform as part of the three-day celebrations being held at the 13th Century Odescalchi Castle, near Rome, over the August bank holiday weekend.
Hip Hop: Black Eyed Peas' Fergie and Will.i.am will perform for £1million when Petra Ecclestone and James Stunt marry.
Ecclestone, worth a reported £2.5 billion, will fly 300 guests to Italy to mark 22-year-old Petra’s marriage to businessman James Stunt, 26. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were married at the same venue.
The wedding celebrations are set to dwarf the sumptuous £1 million party Bernie, 80, laid on at London’s Battersea Power Station to mark Petra’s engagement in May.
The no-expense-spared event is being handled by international party-planners Bentley’s Entertainments.
Petra and James are to marry next month
The event management firm is run by Peregrine Armstrong-Jones, whose brother Lord Snowdon was married to Princess Margaret. The company organised David and Victoria Beckham’s wedding in 1999 and is working on Zara Phillips’s wedding to Mike Tindall in Edinburgh later this month.
The firm specialises in luxury wedding parties and claims to ‘excel in sourcing and producing the ideal act, artist or performance to suit any event and location’.
Its website boasts of having organised party performances by Whitney Houston, Elton John, Lionel Richie, Enrique Iglesias, Christina Aguilera, the Pussycat Dolls, Justin Timberlake and ‘the first and second ever private performances by Robbie Williams’.

It’s the second high-profile private booking for the Black Eyed Peas – whose lead singer Will.i.am, real name William Adams, also manages the career of former X Factor judge Cheryl Cole, 28.
The Los Angeles-based group have won six Grammy awards and clocked up a string of hits, including I Gotta Feeling, Where Is The Love? and My Humps.
In December, the group, who have sold more than 56 million albums worldwide, were flown out to the Caribbean island of St Barts by Russian oligarch and Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich to perform at his New Year’s Eve party.
