A news report published today warns U.S. consumers about a possible salmonella outbreak affecting pistachios.

We avoid these tree nuts anyway--they're one of my daughter's "top 5" foods to avoid. But come on--what is going on? How can any of us feel safe to eat anything anymore, much less those of us with food allergies who rely so heavily on accurate labels and safe food practices.

The only silver lining is that this type of outbreak makes the non-allergic take time to think that foods can cause severe, immediate illness and even death. For some reason, that is not something people readily accept with regard to food allergies. But with salmonella? Many more people will be sitting up and taking notice.

Also, the fact that these outbreaks are being found in nuts? So ironic to me. Especially when I think of some of the more lame arguments we read/hear about that say we are making FA up in our heads. For ex., how many times have you all heard this one: "Allergies to nuts can't be real or at least so common. We didn't have nut allergies when I was in school."

Now apply the same "logic" to the recent salmonella outbreaks. Doesn't sound very good, does it? Just because something didn't occur in the past with foods doesn't mean it can't happen now.

The lesson is to eat minimally processed, whole foods as much as you can. Obviously, FDA practices need a major overhaul. And, ironically, it might be salmonella outbreaks in nuts that finally get some positive changes made.

I was all set to do my "kids are back at school" happy dance this afternoon after the youngest is back at afternoon kindergarten later today, but it looks like that will have to wait for another day or even two.

Yes, it's that time of year again. The trees are budding like crazy, the green shoots are coming up and is that a flower peeking out of the recent Chicago snowstorm? Lots of pollen in the air combined with crazy cold temps and snow has created chaos in my household. Three of us, my food-allergic daughter included, are suffering allergy symptoms and are on allergy meds for the past few weeks now. In my case, I'm fine after the trees finish "budding." The other two have ongoing symptoms all season. Seasonal allergies and asthma often coincide with food allergies, so many of you will have the same problem I'm about to describe.

My daughter appears to be either suffering really bad allergy symptoms or has caught the head cold that's going around. It's now time to experience my yearly dilemma: is it allergies or a "real" cold? Symptoms like stuffiness, sneezing, fatigue are pretty much the same for either a cold or seasonal allergies. Then we've got the whole "Is your throat itchy or scratchy? (A fine distinction, trust me.) "Do you have a fever?" And the dreaded "How do you feel today?"

My daughter is sick of answering these questions as well as experiencing these symptoms. She recently switched to Allegra (the other stuff was making her too sleepy in the a.m.) and seemed fine. But then she was up all last night sneezing with "an itchy throat." Is it a cold or allergies? Up until about an hour ago, I truly had no clue.

I'm right about 50/50 on this question, which means sometimes she is home from school with allergies and sometimes she is sent to school with a cold (which, believing in "health karma" I try very hard not to do. You know, if I don't send my sick kid to school, you won't either. I know it doesn't really work like that but it makes me feel better to think about it that way.)

Today, it looks like I was right about the cold. My daughter is upstairs passed out which would definitely not happen if she were not truly ill. She just doesn't sleep during the day--during the daytime hours, in fact, she resembles Tigger. Extremely bouncy, literally and figuratively.

The "allergy vs. cold" dance is just beginning as allergy season is just now moving into its heyday according to our allergist. And since I'm in Chicago, head cold season lasts pretty much all year long.

It's a game of odds...today it looks like guessed correctly that my daughter has a true illness. Or it could be that Allegra doesn't work for her? Or it doesn't work for her AND she has a cold? Or the pollen count is just really, really obnoxious today? I better polish my mother's intuition skills because I'm really going to need them now!

By now many of you have heard of the THRIVE Allergy Expo coming to Chicago April 18 and 19th at McCormick Place. This is the only allergy expo in North America!

The Expo will have a variety of presentations and info about doctors, treatments and allergy-friendly products. There will also be much time devoted to celiac disease and gluten-free living, as well as resources for dealing with environmental allergies.

As a special incentive to Nut-Free Mom Blog readers, you can receive a discount on tickets when you use code: nutfreemom (all one word) when ordering.

Click here to get the full schedule: http://www.thriveallergyexpo.com/

Plus, on April 18 in Chicago, FAAN will be presenting it's the annual FAAN conference: "Take Action to Prevent Reactions." It's a full day of info, networking and bonding with other food-allergic individuals and their families. This is the first year I will attend and I'm looking forward to it. I hope to see some of you there! FAAN members pay $85 per ticket--that includes all sessions plus lunch. You can get meals to fit a special diet if you give them 2 weeks notice. No kids under 11 allowed, though, so you'll have to find someone to watch the little ones, but I think it's worth it.

Apparently, Chicago is the place to be in April if you're interested in food allergies. FAAN is also hosting a conference in Tarrytown, NY on May 9th, so head there if you're an East Coast allergy parent.

In Yash Raj’s latest production Hadippa, Rani Mukherji is playing the role of a man, more precisely a Sardarji. And guess who is wooing her? Rakhi Sawant. Rakhi has a comical item song in the film where she’s trying to get Rani to fall in love with her, not knowing she is actually a woman!

Hope Rani is able to re-invent herself with this film and so bounce back into the race.

Well, if ever I needed proof that nut allergies are on the rise and that nut-allergic consumers are on companies' radar screens, this is it. I just received a One Step Ahead catalog that contains "Safety Tattoos with a Purpose" for young children. In addition to tattoos that can be personalized to include kids phone numbers, they also sell tattoos that say "No Nuts, Please!" The tattoo has a peanut in a red circle with a line through it--the universal symbol for "not allowed."

What a great product for those of us with very young children who can't always communicate their allergy needs when out and about. I can envision using these on field trips or special outings with preschoolers or toddlers. The temporary tattoos then wipe off when they're no longer needed.

No one wants to single their kids out in a negative way, but products like this seem almost as fun for kids to use as they are useful. I don't know about you but my kids have always loved temporary tattoos.

Just a note: I tried to find these online but was unable to. However, when I called the customer service number they assured me that the tattoos are in stock as of today! The item number is 15164 for "Tattoos with a Purpose": specify the nut-free tattoos. The customer service number is: 1-800-279-8440. They are a busy company, so you may need to call a few times before you reach a live person! :)

I was thrilled to read this news story about how food allergy legislation recently passed in the Illinois House of Representatives. Now the bill goes onto the state senate.

The bill will advocate that all schools need a food allergy action to follow for food allergy emergencies. Even though parents still would have a hand in their child's own food allergy action plan, there would be no need, if this bill passes the Senate, for Illinois parents to be trailblazers on policy simply because they want to send their food-allergic child to school.

I've had to be a "trailblazer" at school and luckily I've had good results for my efforts, but how wonderful if other parents would know that food allergies and action plans were already on the school's radar screen as a matter of course. That's a whole lot more than many of us have had up until now.

For info about who your state reps are, click this link and scroll down. You'll be able to find your district and reps.

Sample letters to send to reps and state senators can be found at FAAN's
"Advocacy" portion of their web site.

And if you're not an Illinois resident, how about proposing a plan like this to your reps?

After a slew of out and out comedies like "Namastey London", "Partner" and "Singh Is Kinng", Katrina Kaif is now working on two "difficult" films - Prakash Jha's political drama "Rajneeti" and Rajkumar Santoshi's romantic comedy "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani"- and the actress wants to devote extra time and thought to the projects.

"This year I would like to allocate time to big films. The kind of films I am doing - 'Rajneeti' and 'Ajab Prem...' are a little more difficult. They need time and also a little more thought process, " Katrina told. The films are slated for release this year.

In "Ajab Prem..." Katrina shares screen space with Ranbir Kapoor and Upen Patel, while in "Rajneeti" she stars alongside a bevy of actors including Ranbir, Ajay Devgan, Arjun Rampal, Nana Patekar and Manoj Bajpai.

Katrina says that Santoshi's dedication and "knack for making his actors win national awards" is something that makes her want to work hard for his film.

"'Ajab Prem...' is a very different film. Raj-ji is a taskmaster on the sets and the results of that are visible. I need to dedicate enough time and attention to this film because I think the movie is going to be very special and very important for me. It's nothing like I have done before, " said the 24-year-old actress.

Katrina shares similar sentiments for Jha, who has helmed films like "Gangaajal" and "Apaharan" in the past.

"Prakash Jha is highly intelligent and highly interested in his project. A film like 'Rajneeti' is not something where I can just jump and say - 'Sir, my hair is done, my costume is done and I'm ready', something I can do in most films that are comic capers.

"For films like his, one has to research clothes. I can't decide on my own what I want to wear or what I would prefer. I have to follow the character I am playing. 'Rajneeti' is a very grounded, a very rooted film, and so I am going to be dedicating a little more time as the project requires it, " she said.

In "Rajneeti" Katrina sports a simple and de-glamourized look in a crisp cotton sari and with her hair neatly tied in a ponytail. Though the look bears a resemblance to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, the director has denied that her role has anything to do with the senior leader.

Though Katrina has mostly starred in comedies like "Namastey London" and "Singh Is Kinng" (Vipul Shah), "Partner" (David Dhawan) and "Welcome" (Anees Bazmee) in her over five-year-old career, she says she "might not be doing another comedy, fun, masti film very dedicatedly any time soon".

Apart from "Rajneeti" and "Ajab Prem...", Katrina has Yash Raj Film's "New York", Anthony D'Souza's "Blue" and also a two-film deal with production house UTV in her kitty.

Katrina Kaif is enjoying a good phase in her career and can afford to spend as much as she can. On herself of course.

But the actress just decided to spurge on the unit members of Rajkumar Santoshi's ‘Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani’.

The buzz is that while shooting at Film City, Kat distributed as much as Rs 5 lakh among the unit members which included the technicians and spot boys.

A source reveals, "After wrapping up the schedule, Katrina went into her vanity van and came out with bundles of notes and started distributing them among the unit members. She was in a happy mood and wanted to share her happiness with everyone."

Katrina has reportedly acted on her instincts and while handing the money also thanked everyone personally.

It’s being said that she was showing appreciation for the long hours, sometimes 16 hours at a stretch that the unit had put in and her way of saying thanks to as many as 300 people was calling them by their names and handing out the cash to each one personally.

The director Santoshi was also reportedly caught by surprise as people don’t usually do what he did

Reportedly Kat doesn’t wish to publicize this whole thing much.

A source said, "Katrina is not comfortable talking about it but yes, she did give away Rs 5 lakh to the entire unit. While handing out the cash, she personally commended everyone on his job.

Also though stars and technicians often get credit for their work most unit people neither get appreciation nor credit. Katrina just felt it was the right thing to do and she did it."

Well, that’s what her handlers say, but in a way by not talking about it, she’s publicizing it already. Much like every other Bollywood star who wishes to show off his/ her charitable side.

Music Director: Salim-Sulaiman and Bohemia; Lyrics: Irfan Siddique, Sameer and Bohemia
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Mohit Chouhan, Tulsi Kumar, Neeraj Shridhar and Bohemia
Rating: ***

Riding high on the success of "Fashion" and "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi", the musical duo of brothers Salim and Sulaiman Merchant are ready with the soundtrack of Akshay Kumar-starrer "8x10 Tasveer" and they seem to have brought together quite a different genre.

They have also presented a mix of both fast-paced peppy numbers and free-flowing, soft melodies.

The first song "Aaja maahi", crooned by Neeraj Shridhar and Tulsi Kumar, starts with a western feel and English lyrics. Even though the words lack punch, the song is melodious and worth listening.

The remix version of this song adds nothing but beats to the original.

Up next is "Haafiz khuda", which has all the qualities to win listeners' hearts with its soulful, melodious music and free -flowing vocals by Mohit Chauhan. In this number, Mohit is joined by Tulsi Kumar behind the mike. The rendition is bound to make listeners sit up and take notice.

"Haafiz khuda" too has a remixed version, but the original is more appealing.

An Akshay Kumar film and a rap number seem to go hand in hand these days. After teaming up with Bohemia in "Chandni Chowk To China", the actor has shared vocals once again with the US-based hip-hop and rap star in "8X10 Tasveer". The song " I got the picture" is a peppy number with the same feel of the rap song in "Chandni Chowk...".

The remix of the same track, which is high on beats, is sure to be a hit on the DJ consoles.

"Kuchh is tarah", which is once again in Mohit Chauhan's and Tulsi Kumar's voice, is a hummable number that pulls one's heart strings. Soothing to the ears, this romantic track brings out the best in Chauhan.

The remix version too doesn't disappoint with appropriate musical arrangements.

Easily the best song of the album, "Nazaara hai" sets the adrenalin pumping with its strong musical backing and powerful vocals by Vishal Dadlani of the composer duo Vishal and Shekhar.

The number is soaked in the flavour of rock music. The predominance of the electric guitar, especially in the middle of the song, makes it a sure shot hit with music buffs.

The remix of "Nazaara hai" is average, nowhere close to the original.

On the whole, Salim-Sulaiman have kept up their good work in "8x10 Tasveer" and are definitely emerging as one of the best in the business.

‘Kambakht Ishq’ in trouble for use of foul language

Promos of Sajid Nadiadwala’s ‘Kambakht Ishq’ starring Kareena Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Carmen Electra, Sylvester Stallone and some other Hollywood stars have landed in trouble for the use of foul language where both the lead stars call each other canine names. Its shows Kareena calling Akki a dog and in turn he calls her a bitch. Apart from this scene, there is also a line indicating that women are only meant for making love.

The people in the Censor Board were obviously not very happy with this and as a result they have given it an A Certificate. Consequently, the film’s promo cannot be shown on TV. Sajid Nadiadwala, who is currently abroad, is gearing up to confront the board when he return to India.

Says, Vinayak Azad, Regional Officer, Censor Board, “Yes, we have given the promos an A Certificate because I found it very inappropriate.”

“Kareena calls Akshay a dog and in turn he calls her a bitch. Apart from this scene, there is also a line indicating that women are only meant for making love. I found that very inappropriate, because in a promo you can’t understand the context of the scene as we have not yet seen the film,” he added.

Family of a man employed with Bollywood actor Asin has alleged that he has gone 'missing' because of abuse by the actor. Asin has denied the charge.

"The concerned person N. Muthu Kumar has left my employment and we informed the police immediately. Other accusations are false," the actress said in a statement Thursday.
According to S. Vadivu, her son Kumar was employed with Asin for four years.

"I am worried as Asin's father Joseph said that Kumar was sacked after he joined the Mumbai underworld several days ago. While my search in Mumbai was fruitless, the facts do not add up because Kumar told me over phone sometime back that he was likely to quit after the actress abused him over his physical handicap," Vadivu told IANS.

Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Sangram Jangid said: "The issue is being blown out of proportion by a section of the press. The complaint has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities and there is nothing more to it."

Asin is currently shooting for "London Dreams" as the female lead with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan.

'If there is heaven, it is here, it is here, it is here'...goes a famous saying. But after looking at the recent cover of L'Officiel, we are forced to conclude that 'If at all, there is a Fairy on Earth, it is her, it is her, it is her'. And we are indeed referring to none other than the yummy delight and the visual treat called Priyanka Chopra, who looks like a Mother of all Fairies!

Full marks to the creative team as well as the (Lucky) photographer and also to the (Luckiest) camera to have caught this actress' mind blowing expressions, which are totally priceless! Although one must admit that the cover does make Priyanka resemble the lovely Sophie Lauren at the first go, but it's the Desi girl's desi-ness that brings her exclusive charm to the picture. And it is this Chopra girl, who simply has the year 2009 tailor made written for her, thanks to the multitude of releases that she has got this year.

All in all, this Power-packed issue of L'Officiel really lives up to the tagline of 'The Power Issue'.

Anurag Basu the director who shot to fame after making Life... In A Metro, has put an end to rumours about him casting Saifeena in a sequel to the movie. When BT contacted him, the director, who didn’t seem very pleased about the news, clarified, “I have no intention of making a sequel to Metro. In fact, I have shelved the project for good, so news of me approaching Saif and Kareena for it is ridiculous.”

Remind him that he had once been very keen to make a sequel to the movie and Anurag says, “Yes, we did announce it. But in the past two years, a few movies were made along the same lines with ensemble casts. So, we decided to put the idea of having a sequel to Metro on the back burner.”

The director, who has recently wrapped up the Barbara Mori- and Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kites, is, however, open to working with Saif and Kareena. “They’re wonderful people, but so far there is no specific story or film, in which I can cast them. However, Saif and I have met a couple of times to figure out what can we do together. That is also not easy considering that Saif now has his own production house,” says Anurag.

Life certainly came full circle for Mugdha Godse this week, as the model-turned-actress returned to the ramp on the first day of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.

And her stint in Bollywood seems to have only upped her sizzle quotient. Looking glamorous in a vibrant saree, Mugdha was the talking point of the day. When we caught up with her after the show, the actress said that she was particularly pleased with what she got to wear. “I really love colourful prints and I’m glad that I got to wear a saree for the show. Mujhe iss saree ke rangon ne chaka-chaundh kar diya. And I am also happy about the fact that I got back to the ramp.” To use a cliché, how did it feel? “I was ecstatic. I’d been waiting for this high for a long time. Each time I walk the ramp, I get a high,” she says.

And how special was the ramp walk, post Fashion? “Life has been treating me very well post Fashion. People want to see more of me, they are appreciating my work and I’m feeling nice about it. I have to say that it is double the responsibility for me, though. Walking the ramp after having worked in Fashion was very different. That did give me a high – but of a different kind,” she says.

What was the difference? “Till I was only a model, I used to see actresses being brought in especially for shows, but today, I was the showstopper myself! It was very different and all that I can say is, life can change,” she says. Looking back, did she feel awkward when celebrities were asked to walk the ramp when she was a model? “I used to see showstoppers, but at that point in time, I was just busy doing my own thing. I only wanted to put my head down and work and better myself as a model. But now, I feel very different. Modelling and acting are two very different jobs and they require me to do very different things,” she says.

But getting back to the green room also means that Mugdha’s back amongst her old friends. And she’s very excited about touching base with them again, saying, “I’ve met some of my friends and they were all very happy to see me. In fact, I’m going to attend some parties and catch up with a whole lot of others as well. It’s good to be back!” As for her future plans, Mugdha says that she has other films in the pipeline too. “Filhaal I’m doing Madhur’s Jail and an untitled Ajay Devgan production, which is being directed by Rohit Shetty,” she says.

She may be known for her trademark curly locks, but Kangna Ranaut has no qualms shaving them off if the right role presented itself. But the actress denies that she’s getting paid Rs 1 crore to go bald for a Tamil film.

“Yes, I am working on a Tamil film, but I haven’t been asked to shave my head for it. But I’d give my left arm to be able to play such a character. Going bald is no big deal for me and if I’m required to do so, I won’t hesitate to do it,” says Kangna.

Rick Roy, who has styled Kangna in the past and will be doing two more projects with her, says, “Kangna believes in putting every effort to get the character she’s playing right even if it requires her to shave off her hair. She is not very particular about her curly hair and likes experimenting with it,” says Rick, who believes that the actress will be able to carry the bald look off gracefully.

After endorsing brands like Fiama Di Wills, Pepsi, Kingfisher Airlines and Tissot, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has now signed up as the brand ambassador of Wrigley's sugar-free chewing gum Orbit.

It is for the first time that the brand has partnered with a film actor to promote oral health benefits, a statement said.

"Deepika's association with Orbit will synchronise well with the brand and its objectives. We believe that this association would help us achieve widespread awareness about the importance of oral care and the benefits of chewing Orbit sugar-free chewing gum," a company spokesperson said.

After a slew of out and out comedies like Namastey London, Partner and Singh Is Kinng, Katrina Kaif is now working on two "difficult" films - Prakash Jha's political drama Rajneeti and Rajkumar Santoshi's romantic comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. So the actress wants to devote extra time and thought to the projects.

"This year I would like to allocate time to big films. The kind of films I am doing - Rajneeti and Ajab Prem are a little more difficult. They need time and also a little more thought process," Katrina told IANS. The films are slated for release this year.

In Ajab Prem,. Katrina shares screen space with Ranbir Kapoor and Upen Patel, while in Rajneeti she stars alongside a host of actors including Ranbir, Ajay Devgan, Arjun Rampal, Nana Patekar and Manoj Bajpai.

Katrina says that Santoshi's dedication and "knack for making his actors win national awards" is something that makes her want to work hard for his film.

"Ajab Prem is a very different film. Rajji is a taskmaster on the sets and the results of that are visible. I need to dedicate enough time and attention to this film because I think the movie is going to be very special and very important for me. It's nothing like I have done before," said the 24-year-old actress.

Katrina shares similar sentiments for Jha, who has helmed films like Gangaajal and Apaharan in the past.

"Prakash Jha is highly intelligent and highly interested in his project. A film like Rajneeti is not something where I can just jump and say - 'Sir, my hair is done, my costume is done and I'm ready', something I can do in most films that are comic capers.

"For films like his, one has to research clothes. I can't decide on my own what I want to wear or what I would prefer. I have to follow the character I am playing. Rajneeti is a very grounded, a very rooted film, and so I am going to be dedicating a little more time as the project requires it," she said.

In Rajneeti, Katrina sports a simple and de-glamourised look in a crisp cotton sari and with her hair neatly tied in a ponytail. Although the look bears a resemblance to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, the director has denied that her role has anything to do with the senior leader.

Though Katrina has mostly starred in comedies like Namastey London and Singh Is Kinng, Partner and Welcome in her over five-year-old career, she says she "might not be doing another comedy, fun, masti film very dedicatedly any time soon".

Talking about her relationship with Abhishek Bachchan, which spiralled into nothing after his engagement with sis Karishma ended, Kareena said, “It’s sad that it had to reach this point but in my life there’s still room for Abhishek, I would say that quite openly. I just wish this little bit of room was still left in his heart for me.”

She adds, “I got launched with Abhishek, irrespective of whatever issues are there today, and that’s engraved for life because that was a special moment in my life. If he doesn’t want me to be in a film with him it’s okay. Co-stars have to feel comfortable with each other. You cannot work together if one person is uncomfortable.”

Of painting the town red, lovely looking ladies and few good looking men.

Happy Threesome
Adhyayan Suman was flanked by his co-stars of Jashnn, Anjana Sukhani and Shahana Goswami. He announced the launch of his website so he can interact with his growing number of fans. We really like Shahana’s chic dressing style. Her bright shirt suits her really well complimenting her skin perfectly. We wish Anjana dressed with a little more seriousness and looked less like a college girl. Adhyayan should button up!

Not Tedha Medha
Gul Panag is the centre of attention at the premiere of her film Straight. While she looks as pretty as ever; with her glowing skin and pretty white dress, why is Vinay Pathak sporting the scruffy look? We like Anuj Choudhry’s casual look.

New couple
Aftab Shivdasani and Aamna Shariff make their red carpet entry for the premiere of Aloo Chaat. We like Aamna’s soft pink shaded dress and her clutch compliments her gown well. Aftab should have chosen something lighter and not so shiny.

Sexy In A Sari
The three gorgeous ladies, Shahana Goswami, Nandita Das and Tisca Chopra, strike a pose for Das’ directorial debut, Firaaq. We are pleasantly surprised by the glow on Tisca’s face. Her earrings are big and beautiful too. Nandita’s bright pink sari blouse suits her perfectly. Shahana could not look better!

Lady in Red
Asin is the woman of the hour! She is the brand ambassador of a fairness cream. We love her piercing red satin dress and those lovely intense red peep toes. If only the background wasn’t as red, it would not have hurt out eyes!
