The royal couple made their vows more than 300 tweets per second were filling the microblogging website Twitter. Facebook similarly said 74 status updates per second mentioned the royal wedding.

On Twitter the celebrations dominated the conversation. All of the top ten trending topics – the most popular words included in messages – were related to the royal wedding, many including a patriotic “proudtobebritish” tag.

The wedding broke the record for the number of people watching a live news event online. The previous record was held by President Obama’s inauguration in 2009, which was watched by around 70 million people online.

But Google alone was expecting 400 million viewers for its live stream of the royal wedding on YouTube, which ran smoothly on the day. Official figures are yet to be released.

Despite predictions the wedding would set new worldwide benchmarks for online video audiences and social network participation, the BBC was unable to cope.
