As the world celebrates 20 years of the falling of the Berlin Wall, here is a pictorial account of the time in 1961 when it was built.


Even then the Soviet sector was separated from the others by a fence.



After the fall of Nazi Germany, Berlin was divided into four sector, British, french, American and Soviet.

But in 1961 as relations between the Soviet Union and the West deteriorated, the wire fence was converted into a brick and concrete wall. The Berlin Wall.



This East German lady officer seems happier chatting up then being dismayed by the coming up of the Wall.


The Berlin Wall separated families. A mother and daughter talk to each other across the wall.


The Wall cut through the heart of Berlin

A divided Berlin. A divided Germany. A divided humanity.
