She won praise for her healthy lifestyle when she shed nearly three stone with a dramatic diet and exercise regime.
Yet now, at seven months pregnant, Hannah Waterman admits she can’t give up smoking.
The former EastEnders actress was last week seen lighting up a cigarette on a car journey with the father of her unborn baby, actor Huw Higginson.
Higginson, 47, who played PC George Garfield in The Bill, seemed unconcerned and also chose to enjoy a few cigarettes while driving the couple’s blue Land Rover near their home in Shepperton, Surrey, on Tuesday.
Last night Hannah, 35, said: ‘Smoking is a terribly difficult habit to quit and sadly I just fell off the wagon. I have been fighting the addiction during my pregnancy but I have sometimes slipped and had the occasional cigarette, but I am trying to quit.’
It is Hannah’s first baby and she added: ‘My advice to people would be not to start smoking in the first place as it is so tough to stop.’
It is not the first time Hannah – who endured a very public split from husband and former EastEnders co-star Ricky Groves – has spoken about her desire to quit smoking.
Speaking at the release of her fitness DVD in 2009, the daughter of Minder star Dennis Waterman said: ‘Smoking’s definitely aged my skin. I’ve got to give up.’
Her smoking habit was criticised by medical experts, who warned that it is hazardous to the health of an unborn baby.
Dr Malcolm Vandenburg, a consultant and pharmaceutical physician, said: ‘Even one cigarette during pregnancy has to be considered an absolute no-no for mothers because of the increased health risks smoking brings.
‘Almost everything that can go wrong with a baby, such as being stillborn or the victim of a cot death, is significantly increased if the mother smokes during pregnancy or is subject to passive smoking.
‘The risk to the baby’s health is increased further if the cigarettes are smoked in a confined space as this leads to the baby receiving less oxygen, and what oxygen it does receive is of a poorer quality. This is why it is vital for all mums-to-be to give up smoking straight away.’
Deborah Arnott, chief executive of campaigning charity Action on Smoking and Health, said: ‘Every year maternal smoking causes about 300 completely avoidable still births, 2,200 premature births and 5,000 miscarriages.

‘It may also increase the risk of congenital abnormalities of the heart, limbs and face. That’s why it’s so sad to see a pregnant woman smoking.
‘But it is important to recognise that it’s a sign of how addictive smoking really is.’

New claims: Ricky Groves thinks estranged wife Hannah Waterman may have cheated on him with Huw Higginson while they were married

Ricky Groves has revealed he believes his estranged wife Hannah Waterman slept with Huw Higginson while he was still married to her.
The 43-year-old star was left stunned when Higginson's wife rung him to inform him Waterman was pregnant with Higginson's baby, and now believes Waterman may have been unfaithful with The Bill star during their marriage.
Groves, whose marriage was rocked in December 2009 when Waterman told him she had cheated, also said he had been hoping to rekindle his relationship with Waterman before he heard she was pregnant.

New love: Waterman is now six months pregnant with Higginson's child

She might be six months pregnant, but Hannah Waterman was taking every step yesterday to avoid feeling ruff.
Sporting a glamorous new hairdo, the star took advantage of the beautiful spring weather to get some fresh air and take her black labrador dog for a walk.
Wearing a grey jersey smock top and cardigan, black leggings and leopard print ballet pumps, the former EastEnders actress was also sporting stylish black sunglasses and perfectly manicured nails.

However, despite her starry appearance, the 35-year-old showed she wasn't too posh to scoop her pooch's poop as she nipped back from shops near her London home with some groceries.
The daughter of Minder star Dennis Waterman announced earlier this month that former Bill star Huw Higginson was the father of her unborn child.

He moved into her house last year and she said they were ‘blissfully happy’ together.
However, last week, it emerged that Higginson's wife of 14 years, mother-of-two Geraldine Dove-Higginson, 45, is planning to emigrate to Australia to put her split behind her.
She told the Daily Mail: 'It’s a tough time at the moment and my priority is my two children and my work.’

With a wide grin on her face, Hannah Waterman looks more than happy as she walks down a London street clasping the hand of a male friend.
Just three weeks later it was revealed that the actress had ended her three-year marriage to Strictly Come Dancing star Ricky Groves.
The pictures show Hannah letting go of her friend, Les Miserables star Simon Bowman, and turning away when she spots the cameras.
An onlooker told the Sun: 'She was walking down the street openly holding hands. She and the guy looked totally relaxed and happy.
'But as soon as they saw they were being photographed, Hannah dropped his hand and they jumped apart.'
Bowman has the lead role of Jean Valjean in musical Les Miserables.

Hannah's spokesman said: 'Simon is an old family friend - he's actually an old friend of Dennis's.
'He has a partner and there is nothing going on.'
Hannah's marriage ended after she lost three stone on an intensive diet and exercise regime.

Heartbroken Ricky Groves has been quick to lay the blame for his split from Hannah Waterman after 10 years together on her radical diet. But the truth he's hiding is that the diet wasn't anything to do with the break-up.
‘Hannah and Ricky had been together for a long time even though they were only married for three years,' a friend tells Now.
‘She desperately wanted
a family and they'd been trying for a baby, but it just didn't happen. Hannah felt that Ricky wasn't supportive enough.
‘She fell out of love with him about a year ago. Hannah was very hurt that Ricky's talked so much about their marriage breakdown, especially as the reasons he gave don't represent the full picture in her view.'
She's been very vocal herself about her desire for children, publicly declaring: ‘I work to live, not live to work and we did get married for a reason - to have children one day.'
Hannah, 35, went from 10st 4lb to 7st 8lb in five months, prompting Ricky to say: ‘Our marriage was the price.'
He blamed his wife's newfound confidence for the rows that eventually tore them apart, adding: ‘I wish she'd go back to being my Hannah. The girl I met is not the girl we see now.'
But Ricky, 41, did shed some light on the real reason for
the split, admitting that he hadn't been supportive enough of her desire to get pregnant, and now wishes he'd done things differently. ‘I was scared,' he said.
According to one of Hannah's friends: ‘She wanted to get healthier and out of the rut she was in.
'She'd been unhappy with the way things were for a while and hoped that if they were both fitter, they might be in better shape to conceive, especially as neither of them was getting any younger.
'But Ricky seemed determined to stay in that rut and she felt she was running out of time.'

Hannah Waterman has broken her silence over her separation from husband Ricky Groves.
The actress, who met the 41-year-old while working on EastEnders, says it's been a difficult time.

'It's really sad because we'd been together for ten years,' she said.

But Hannah, 34, has rubbished rumours she's already moved on.
She was snapped hand-in-hand with actor Simon Bowman earlier this week.

'A very good family friend has been dragged into the melee,' she told Loose Women.

'We went out to dinner and were crossing the road holding hands. We didn't leap apart. He is a friend.'

With the new year upon us, women everywhere are planning their get fit routines.
But for Lisa Scott-Lee and Hannah Waterman there is no need to diet. Instead the pair are stripping off to reveal their newly svelte figures.
Former Steps star Lisa is keen to show off her figure, after giving birth to daughter Star just three months ago.
