For me, the most stressful part of traveling with my nut-allergic daughter is restaurants. When you're away from home and staying at a hotel, restaurants are your main source of food. The bottom line is that you just never know what is going on in a restaurant kitchen and who is doing the cooking. As we know, restaurant workers vary widely in their knowledge and understanding of food allergies. So the pressure is on us to communicate and navigate menus and establishments on our own. Yes, some restaurants do a stellar job, but you always have to do your research prior to eating.
Less is more. When evaluating a restaurant for allergic folks, seek our restaurants with small, simple menus. Why? Well, big menus that feature everything under the sun usually contain several off-limits items and cross-contact risk becomes greater. Also, the bigger the menu, the more likely that several chefs are cooking at once and again, cross-contact is an issue.
Find out what kind of oil they use for frying. This is especially important if a fried dish is one of a resto's specialities. When we travel, we call restaurants with lots of fried items and ask if they use peanut oil. If they do, we skip it. I've heard a lot about the "cold-pressed" vs "refined" peanut oil debate and some people insist that peanut oil is safe. The thing is, people have reacted to peanut oil -- some fatally -- and I would also argue that if you tell restaurant staff that you can have peanut oil with a peanut allergy, you're sending them a mixed message that may result in other kitchen mishaps. Plus, no peanut oil is 100% free of peanut protein, so for me, that's dancing too close to the mouth of the volcano. Many times, restaurants tell us that they use canola oil, and we have staff confirm this from the kitchen. These are the restos we feel good visiting. If so, don't order a salad. The reason? Sometimes chefs untrained in food allergy simply pick the nuts off of a prepared salad and serve it--this makes for a potential reaction because the salad is then contaminated. Dressings look alike and can be mistaken for each other. Side note: my daughter knows to do this already. When she ordered a Greek salad, I opened my mouth to say--let's look at the other salads first--and she already had read the menu. None of them contained nuts. One more reason to involve your kids in the menu-reading process, even when they are young. It's great when they take responsibility for their own allergies.
Take the pressure off with some non-restaurant meals. We made sure to get a room with a refrigerator, enabling us to give our kids some cereal for breakfast or simple snacks. We also had a picnic dinner and lunch during our vacation using items we purchased from the local grocery store. Our kids really enjoyed picking out foods for our picnics and our allergic daughter felt more in control and more relaxed. Our picnics were some of our best times while on our trip--and it was the one time I wasn't on alert for allergic reaction. I needed a break--and so will you. Adding a few non-restaurant meals to your trip is not only stress-saving, it's money-saving as well.

Local 10 News in Miami, Florida is reporting that around 6 p.m. ET the “Beautiful Girls” singer and a female passenger crashed into the bridge which connects Miami’s Palm Island to the MacArthur Causeway.
Miami Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene and rushed Kingston to Jackson memorial where he is now. A spokesman with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told Local 10 that Kingston and his female passenger “needed medical attention.”
According to Local 10 News the cause of the crash is still under investigation, but thus far it doesn't seem that alcohol played a part in the accident.
TMZ is reporting that Kingston is being treated in the trauma ward and is in critical condition. MTV has not been able to confirm this information.
An unnamed rep for the singer issued this statement to TMZ: "Sean Kingston was in an accident today. No further details are available at the moment. He and his family thank everyone for the well-wishes."
The 20-year-old actress, who was carrying her two-toned Chanel flap bag, will be debuting a clip from her upcoming movie, The Art of Getting By, on MTV next week!

The series will also follow a new group of brides-to-be. The ratings sensation - which pulled in 9.1 million viewers in its first run - will return early next year.
Makers Firecracker Films have already signed up new Irish travellers and English and Romany gypsies.
A spokeswoman said: "The new series will retain the spectacular celebrations and rite-of-passage events that made the first so popular.
"However, each film will also investigate themes that arose from the first series - work and money, life on the road, the family, health, prejudice, education and cultural differences."
Channel 4's Tina Flintoff said: "Big Fat Gypsy Weddings was a phenomenon.
“Zimbabwe has become my second home and South Africa needs to celebrate this country more than any other country. This was our home during the liberation struggle and they contributed so much to the liberation of South Africa,” said Kunene.
He added that as a way of giving back to Zimbabweans, he was going to open a club similar to the ones he owns in South Africa.
“Zar is here to stay and we are going to have a Zar in Zimbabwe. Every concert we will host in South Africa, we will bring it down to Zimbabwe as this is my second home,” said Kunene.
Kunene, who also attended the Akon and Sean Paul concert which was held in Harare last year, admitted that he was impressed with the turnout at the show.
He added that he would ensure that Zarfest leaves lasting impressions in the country.
“I give people maximum effort in whatever I do. Zimbabweans should gear up for a memorable show,” said Kunene.

David Mine, an Asian descent student at Soquel High, was suspended for being a member of a "White Supremacy" group of students. He states that he wore a white t shirt last week for the school's group picture, but that his shirt was randomly selected and had nothing to do with expressing "white supremacy."
Further, it appears that some of the accused students were merely pranksters, occasionally shouting "White Power" as a joke that was taken way more seriously than was ever intended. Now they have been indelibly linked to "racism" and "white supremacy" on the internet which could destroy their reputations, job prospects and acceptance at universities. Even so, David Mine was not part of these ill-advised jokes. He and his lawyer speak out in the video embedded below the fold (click on "read more").
A couple of weeks ago, one of the friends of my band, who also plays bass, was contemplating buying a string bass. He asked if I could bring one of mine to our practice location in San Jose, so that he could try it out.
I own a couple of string basses that had been gathering dust in my music room at home, largely unused, as I rely on my bass guitar for practices and gigs.
I brought my Palatino laminate bass to the practice room. It is a cheap bass, though constructed well and nicely set up for easy playing. I also have a fully carved bass that I hope to play in future gigs. It is much more expensive and has better tone, and I surely wouldn't want to leave that in the practice location.
My friend tried the Palatino bass and I haven't heard from him since. I think he decided an upright string bass is not for him. However, I decided to leave the bass in the practice room and use it for some songs. The band was fascinated with its appearance and was keen to try it out.
My first attempt was to play the bass part to "Stray Cat Strut" and the wife of one of the band members videotaped it. The band loved it.
Last night we practiced again and I played the string bass on several songs. Again, the band loved it and felt that the string bass has a much better sound than the bass guitar. We will use the bass at a party on June 11th, not for all songs but on several of them.
I am now practicing string bass daily at home, using my carved bass (a Calin Wultur Panormo), and I'm excited: I have always planned to play string bass with a band...someday.
Someday has finally arrived!
Apparently, someone has been putting Nazi symbol graffiti around the school, and this group of white students is suspected of being the culprits, and suspicion is good enough to want to suspend them. They couldn't prove the graffiti guilt, so they had to prove something easier, i.e. that the students were wearing white t shirts.
It seems to me that the program and goal of many universities and high schools in America is to erase America, replacing it with something else. In general, they do this by:
(1) Supporting and celebrating the culture, traditions, language and history of "the other," that is, nonwhite minorities, while claiming that doing the same for the white majority is offensive and racist;
(2) Instilling in the minds of the white students that they and their ancestors are evil oppressors, and that by the very color of their skin they are suspect and untrustworthy, deserving of shame and repentance;
(3) Justifying anti-American and anti-white attitudes in minorities by giving undue credence to their grievances and prejudices, and by reinforcing their status as "oppressed victims" at the hands of Americans or white people;
(4) Instilling in the minds of all students that it is a crime for any white people to be proud of their race or their heritage, causing knee-jerk reactions against any alleged "thought crimes," e.g. that celebrating Cinco de Mayo may not be appropriate or desirable for a public school activity in America. (Hispanic kids should be assimilated into American culture and become Americans, instead of encouraged to remain separate and apart from, and hostile to, America.)
As for the white kids who understandably feel alienated by the leftist culture that surrounds them on campus, they should find more effective means of resistance. Shouting "white power" or adopting Nazi symbols (if that is the case) is absolutely not the way. Also, being white is something many patriots have in common, but no one should be excluded from a pro-American resistance movement based simply on their race. Attitudes and beliefs are more important. We need all the friends we can get.
What is an effective way for alienated pro-American kids to resist leftist indoctrination on campus? That is a question worthy of some serious thought. I don't currently have the answer. Suggestions?
