I was SO excited to receive samples of delicious Boom Choco Boom candy bars from our friends at Enjoy Life Foods! And check out the smile on my daughter's face as she displays her candy bar in the photo. Let me just say the bar was GONE a few minutes after that photo was taken.

What are Boom Choco Boom bars? They are delicious dairy-free, gluten-free and NUT-FREE bars of chocolatey goodness. The bars are made with rice milk and they come in several varieties including dark chocolate, milk chocolate and crispy rice chocolate--my daughter's favorite (and mine.) We do not need to avoid dairy around here but let me tell you, people, these bars disappeared quicker than you can say "Hey, are there any more of those Boom Choco Boom bars left?" My entire family, including my daughter without any food allergies LOVED these bars.

One thing I really enjoyed about them was they have all the chocolate taste but a much lighter feel on the palate due to the rice milk. They don't "overfill" your tummy. This may be why my oldest kept asking to eat more of these. She told me to tell my readers that she "thought she was gonna die" if I didn't give her another crispy rice bar right after the first one. So of course I did. What's a mom to do?

Nut-free chocolate is hard to find--nut-free, gluten-free and dairy-free chocolate that tastes great is even harder to find. I think these candy bars would make great stocking stuffers.

John Lennon Signs Autograph For His Killer, Mark David Chapman, on December 8, 1980

December 8, 2010 -- this coming Wednesday -- will mark the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death at the hands of a crazed fan.  Yes, John Lennon was a kook politically, but a musical genius and a great rock musician.  I was and continue to be a fan.  His loss to music was incalculable, the injustice of it maddening.

Early in the day of December 8, 1980, Lennon had signed an autograph for his killer (see picture), a warped piece of human excrement named Mark David Chapman.  Chapman had purchased a hand gun from a pawn shop and was stalking Lennon outside his New York apartment complex, the Dakota.  Later that evening, when Lennon returned from a recording session, Chapman was still there outside the Dakota.  He then pulled his gun and fired five shots: three hit Lennon in the chest, and one hit his left shoulder.

Mark David Chapman was obviously insane, but opted to drop the insanity defense and plead guilty. He received a prison sentence of 20 years to life, but has never been released.  Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, has opposed all of Chapman's parole hearings and parole has been denied to Chapman six times.  Personally, I hope the sick bastard never gets out of jail.

Mark David Chapman was a fan of John  Lennon.  So why did he murder Lennon?  I remember reading the opinions of psychiatrists shortly after Lennon's death.  One said that by killing Lennon, Chapman sought to own Lennon, to forever link his name with that of his hero.

The new Hollywood film "Fair Game" is Democrat propaganda on steroids.  It is so maliciously false, that even the liberal Washington Post was appalled.  They wrote an editorial last Friday denouncing the film.

First, some background.

The Valerie Plame affair during the Bush Administration is one of the most mendacious, destructive and bad-faith episodes in the history of the Democratic Party.  Plame, a Democrat who worked a desk job at the CIA, arranged for her husband, former diplomat Joe Wilson, to go to Nigeria to investigate whether Saddam Hussein had sought to purchase "yellow cake" from that country.  Yellow cake is a concentrate of uranium needed for producing atomic weapons.  Wilson at first reported that Saddam Hussein did attempt the purchase.  He later changed his story claiming that his investigation revealed the opposite.  His change was apparently for political reasons only -- to further undermine Bush on the "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq as a reason for going to war.  The Post editorial explains:

The movie portrays Mr. Wilson as a whistle-blower who debunked a Bush administration claim that Iraq had tried to purchase uranium from the African country of Niger. In fact, an investigation by the Senate intelligence committee found that Mr. Wilson's reporting did not affect the intelligence community's view on the matter, and an official British investigation found that President George W. Bush's statement in a State of the Union address that Britain believed that Iraq had sought uranium in Niger was well-founded.

After that, someone in the State Department inadvertantly leaked Valerie Plame's identity to the media, i.e. had identified her as a CIA agent.  Plame claimed her undercover identity had been exposed, on purpose by the Bush Administration, to punish her for Wilson for refuting Bush's claim that Hussein had sought to buy Yellow Cake from Nigeria.  (Actually, Bush only repeated what British intelligence had said about the Yellow Cake.)

A great public clamor was then created:  did Bush "out" Valerie Plame as a secret CIA agent?  Did he do so to punish her for her husband's (politically-motivated) statements about the Yellow Cake?  The answer to these questions is, no, Bush did no such thing.  It was just another false controversy manufactured by the Democratic Party who views all political opponents as mortal enemies to be destroyed, by any means possible.  The Post editorial states:

"Fair Game" also resells the couple's story that Ms. Plame's exposure was the result of a White House conspiracy. A lengthy and wasteful investigation by a special prosecutor found no such conspiracy - but it did confirm that the prime source of a newspaper column identifying Ms. Plame was a State Department official, not a White House political operative.

The Post's editorial confirms what we on the right have known for some time:  that the Wilsons are self-promoting liars with no shred of personal integrity whatsoever.  They are the most extreme form of narcissistic leftists who would sacrifice anyone or anything in furtherance of their political agenda, personal notoriety and self-promotion.  The Post sums it up:

Hollywood has a habit of making movies about historical events without regard for the truth; "Fair Game" is just one more example. But the film's reception illustrates a more troubling trend of political debates in Washington in which established facts are willfully ignored.

I had another post I was going to run today, but the influx of e-mails in my inbox have prompted me to re-run a post that is very timely for the holidays.

A little over a month ago I asked parents of non-allergic kids NOT to bake for the allergic ones. My reasons? Cross-contact, lack of food allergy education and risk of allergic reaction due to lack of understanding. Also, studies have shown that desserts cause the most allergic reactions. Many kids also experience allergic reactions while at school: my daughter has.

With the winter holidays upon us, I am now getting many, many e-mails from well-intentioned moms who want to bake for the allergic kids in their classroom. This post is for them. First of all THANK YOU for caring. I, and the other moms who deal with food allergies, seriously appreciate your concern for our kids. You rock.

Secondly, and don't get your feelings hurt now: Please don't offer to bake for my allergic child. The only exception would be that your child has the EXACT SAME allergies as another child and you have kitchen free of those particular allergens.

I know it's hard to grasp, but your cookies could land a kid in the hospital. Put yourself in our shoes: would you want others, who may not be quite sure how to go about it, to bake for your severely food-allergic child?

I urge everyone interested to follow the link to my original post. Here I outline all the reasons why non-allergic peeps baking for the allergic is a bad idea.

A much better idea: Bring something with a label that's not homebaked. Or bring non-edible treats.

One other note that I will follow up on later: Almond extract. Don't use almond extract for the nut-allergic.

Dealing with nut allergies isn't like trying to get out of a parking ticket, unfortunately. When you are severely allergic, wiggle room doesn't exist with regard to what you ingest. Either you're allergic to nuts or you're not and if you are, you just avoid anything that says "almond." Period. Unless you want to risk the ticket, i.e., the possibly fatal trip to the emergency room.

Sorry if I sound cranky but there is real lack of education out there and I am concerned for all the nut-allergic kiddoes as they head to their winter parties or what have you.

Allergic families, this is for you. Please step up! Offer to bring something so that the room moms and family members aren't put in a position where they even feel like they have to bring a treat specifically for your allergic child. Be proactive and it will pay off, I promise. Your kids will appreciate your involvement, too.
