0 comments Posted by org at 9:20 PMOn Wednesday I responded to a Craig's list ad for a senior CPA for audit and tax, so responded to it. The poster of the ad called me, gushing over my extensive resume, and asked me to come in and talk to him. I did. I knew from his name and accent he was Indian, but did not know that he was a Muslim until I sat down in front of his desk. He had a beard, and there was a Muslim newsletter laying on his desk. It was then that I silently spoke to God: "You really have a strange sense of humor!"
He was a young guy who is facing his third tax season and needs some help. I found him personally likeable, so said I'd come back the next day and do some work for him and see how it goes.
Today he introduced me to some of his associates, all Muslims. One was a client; the other was a marketing consultant, complete with white knitted cap, and the other was an employee, a young man who has passed the CPA exam but has no experience. I found all of them to be very likeable, cheerful and possessing a healthy sense of humor. They seemed totally accepting of me and I returned their friendliness.
My new associate took me to lunch at an Indian restaurant. When we returned to the office, he did his afternoon prayers right there in the office, bowing towards Mecca in the middle of the floor. I didn't mind. I almost told him to pray for more business, but thought the better of it.
I don't know where this is going to lead, but I will stick with them for awhile, and sincerely try to help them. I figure God has his reasons for this association and I want to see what they are. I suspect the lesson to be learned is that, although Islam is a violent, oppressive and cruel ideology, many of its adherents are innocents, sincerely trying to do the right thing and live productive lives. Many Muslims are decent people. That said, I doubt that anything can favorably change my opinion of Islam or Muhammad. However, I can better appreciate Pamela Geller's statement that one can love Muslims even while hating their ideology.
On a side note, my new associate told me he had received 200 resumes the first day he ran the ad. A lot of people responding to the ad had excellent experience and credentials and some seemed desperate, willing to work for almost nothing. Achmed, my new associate (not his real name) said that it would be good if we could put some of these unfortunates to work. In any case, the response to the ad underscores just how bad the job situation is here in Silicon Valley.

Michael Wittmann (April 22, 1914 – August 8, 1944) was a German Waffen-SS tank commander during the Second World War. Wittmann would rise to the rank of SS-Hauptsturmführer (captain) and was a Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross holder.
He was credited with the destruction of 138 tanks and 132 anti-tank guns, along with an unknown number of other armoured vehicles, making him one of Germany's top scoring panzer aces, together with Johannes Bölter, Ernst Barkmann, Otto Carius and Kurt Knispel who was the top scoring ace of the war with 168 tank kills.
Wittmann is most famous for his ambush of elements of the British 7th Armoured Division, during the Battle of Villers-Bocage on 13 June 1944. While in command of a single Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger he destroyed up to 14 tanks and 15 personnel carriers along with 2 anti-tank guns within the space of 15 minutes.
The circumstances behind Wittmann’s death have caused some debate and discussion over the years, but it has been historically accepted that Trooper Joe Ekins, the gunner in a Sherman Firefly, of the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry was his killer. Halloween is on everyone's mind these days and if your child has severe food allergies, the prospect of candy is definitely scarier than any other aspect of this holiday.
When my daughter was first diagnosed with life-threatening peanut and tree nut allergies, we considered not doing the whole trick-or-treating thing. It just seemed counterproductive and potentially harmful emotionally. Why be handed lots of candy that you can't eat? We thought about doing other Halloween activities, like attending Halloween-themed events at the zoo and Chicago museums, but seriously thought about just skipping the candy routine.
My daughter was 5 years old at the time and all she cared about was dressing up like a Disney Princess (that year, I think it was Sleeping Beauty.) She really wanted to go door to door in her fancy costume and I didn't want to have her miss out. Thinking back to my own childhood, Halloween was never only about the candy. It was mostly about dressing up and hanging out with my friends after dark. Candy was a nice side benefit--but definitely not the whole show.
Why should it be any different for my daughter then? We decided to take her out and just have her hand us the obvious unsafe candies--Snickers, Reeses, Butterfingers, M&Ms, and sort through the rest of it later.
It was amusing to see the reactions of neighbors who tried to hand my daughter a Snickers bar. She would politely refuse, ask if they had anything else and then say "OK, then. Thank you anyway" and skip back down the street. Most were like "huh?" A few thought she was being ungrateful or picky. So what? She was so empowered. Finally, I said "just take the candy and I'll put it in a separate bag." That's what she did and all was well.
When we got home, I traded her unsafe candy for a Halloween treats bag: Bonne Belle lip balm, stickers, safe candy and a Halloween book. She loved it!
By the next year, she was running back to me to hand me Snickers bars and the running to the next house without a second thought. Let me tell you, people love their Snickers. I had a bag full of them by the end of the night. No matter. Being with her buddies and dressing up was enough for my daughter--plus she knew she got her own special goody bag later.
A lot of you may wonder "what's the point" about trick-or-treating with nut allergies but if your child really wants to do it, I say go for it. It's a way to show them that they can participate with other kids, while still being careful about their allergy. Now that my daughter is older and her trick-or-treating days are numbered, I'm so glad she enjoyed this. I don't think she'll remember the bag full of Snickers as much as she'll remember the good times she had dressing up, seeing "spooky" decorations and running around in the dark with her friends.

Here's the Seth McFarlane "Family Guy" cartoon that ran on Fox last night. It features Rush Limbaugh and Brian the dog. Limbaugh gives liberal Brian one of his books, and Brian becomes a right wing firebrand overnight.
The cartoon has more conservative stereotypes than it does liberal. It had digs at George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, but hardly mentions Obama. Was it funny? Sort of, but like most things liberal, it wasn't really balanced. All the jokes are anti-conservative, though muted. McFarlane, the producer of the show, is a flaming liberal, but he held himself somewhat in check for this episode, probably as the price of Rush's participation. Per Rush today, McFarlane reports being deluged with hate mail from the left for "making Rush look good."
